Types of back injuries car accidents can cause
There are many different types of back injuries, including:
Spinal cord injury – The spinal cord connects the brain to all other parts of the body, using a network of nerves to control motor functions, sensory functions, and bodily functions. An incomplete spinal cord injury, in which the spinal cord is partially severed, can result in partial paralysis. A complete spinal cord injury, in which the spinal cord is completely severed, can result in paralysis below the injury. Paraplegia is paralysis of the legs and lower body. Quadriplegia is total paralysis from the neck down.
Fractured vertebra – There are 33 small bones, or vertebrae, that make up the spinal column. One or more can be fractured in a collision. These are often compression fractures – small breaks or cracks that result in pain and limited movement.
Herniated disc – Between each adjacent pair of vertebrae, there is a small disc that provides cushioning. Each has a fibrous outer layer and a soft, gel-like center. During a crash, the soft center can become herniated and bulge outward. This injury is also called a ruptured disc or slipped disc.
Facet joint injuries – These are connections between vertebrae that nerve roots pass through and also allow the spine to bend and twist during everyday activities.
Spondylolisthesis – This is a vertebra that has been displaced by a fracture, which can lead to compression of the spinal canal or nerves.
Strains and sprains – This happens when soft tissue stretches beyond its normal range of motion, resulting in damage. A strain is damage to the tendons in the back that connect bone to muscle. A sprain is damage to the ligaments connecting joints to bones.
Tears – Muscles or tendons in the back can be torn in an accident.
There are several symptoms that can indicate a back injury. These include pain (especially when moving), tingling or numbness, discomfort when walking, stiffness, or muscle spasms. It’s important to get medical attention as soon as possible.
Treatment for back pain depends on the type and severity of the injury. It may include physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid injections, and rest. More serious injuries may require surgery and hospitalization.
Recovering financial compensation after a back injury
Medical expenses can add up quickly, and many people are forced to miss time from work because of their back injuries. This can create financial stress. If you suffered a back injury, you may wonder how you will be able to pay your bills.
If a negligent driver caused the crash that left you injured, you shouldn’t have to pay. But negligent drivers often deny doing anything wrong – even though they were speeding, texting, driving recklessly, or even driving under the influence.
Insurance companies aren’t on your side. They are only interested in paying you as little as possible. They have many tactics they use to limit your compensation. Attorney Leigh knows them all – he used to represent insurance companies. Now he uses his knowledge and experience to fight for the rights of accident victims.
Our firm takes your injury seriously from the start. We investigate your crash to look for evidence that the other driver was negligent. Attorney Leigh carefully reviews accident reports, medical records, and other documentation. He interviews witnesses and if needed, consults accident reconstruction experts.
